Working Principle

An ultrasonic level transmitter works on the time-of-flight principle using high-frequency sound waves.
1. Ultrasonic Pulse Emission The transmitter emits ultrasonic sound waves (typically 20–200 kHz) from the sensor towards the liquid surface.
2. Wave Reflection The sound waves travel through the air, hit the liquid surface, and get reflected back to the sensor.
3. Echo Reception The sensor receives the reflected echo signal.
4. Time Measurement The device measures the time taken for the pulse to travel to the surface and return (round-trip time).
5. Distance Calculation Based on the speed of sound, the distance is calculated using: Distance = (Speed of Sound × Time) / 2
6. Level Determination The transmitter subtracts the measured distance from the total tank height to determine the liquid level.
7. Output Signal Generation The calculated level is converted into standard output signals like 4–20 mA, HART, or digital display for monitoring and control.
