Working Principle

1. Emission of signal/field
o The sensor emits a signal such as:

  • Electromagnetic field
  • Infrared light
  • Ultrasonic waves

2. Interaction with object
o When an object enters the sensing range, it:

  • Reflects the signal, or
  • Disturbs the field

3. Change detection
o The sensor detects a change in the returned signal or field strength.

4. Signal processing
o Internal electronics process this change.

5. Output generation
o Sensor gives an output (ON/OFF signal) indicating object presence.

Working by Types

1. Inductive Proximity Sensor

  • Works on electromagnetic induction
  • Detects only metal objects
  • Metal causes change in magnetic field → sensor triggers

2. Capacitive Proximity Sensor

  • Works on capacitance
  • Detects metal + non-metal (plastic, liquid, etc.)
  • Object changes capacitance → output generated

3. Optical (Photoelectric) Sensor

  • Uses light (infrared/laser)
  • Object reflects or interrupts light beam

4. Ultrasonic Sensor

  • Uses ultrasonic waves
  • Measures time taken for echo to return
